There's a lot on your list I haven't played yet, and I would say I'll have to go pick up some of those titles and try them out. I have to agree that Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross are great games in their own regard. Chrono Trigger is probably my favorite rpg.
However, while I understand your point of view on the linearity and ease of Final Fantasy X, I do suggest that you try out Final Fantasy X-2 anyway. It's not really fair to shun the second in the series because the first one didn't live up to it's name. Final Fantasy X-2 has quite a few side quests, a nice storyline (which you'll like if you like X's storyline), and brings back 'jobs' such as thief and black mage from previous final fantasy games. So I suggest that even if you're doubtful to give it a try. Maybe you'll like it. And if not, well at least you know you gave it a shot.
Plus, with Final Fantasy 12 out now you might like to try that as well. I find it to be a fairly decent game too.
Anonymous: Why not give FFX-2 a shot?
