Ahhh... the good ol' days of the NES. The days when I thought cheating was OK.
What better way to cheat back then but by using the Game Genie, by Galoob
of all companies.
The Game Genie could be compared to the modern day GameShark with a few
major differences: First off, you could only have three lines of codes
which meant a maximum of three codes, and of course the good codes took
up two or three lines so your options were limited. Second, you had to
enter the codes manually every time you played. So let's say you wanted
to skip to the last level in Battletoads for the fifth time, you would
have to enter the code every time you turned off the game. Third was the
fact that codes weren't as abundant as they are for GameShark. I mean
the big purple book of codes was good and all, and it did have the Hammer
Bros. suit code for SMB3, but for new games you had to wait a month for
the new GamePro in hopes that they had codes for your game in there. Finally,
the Game Genie was a major pain in the ass to get out of the system. None
of these fancy "it fits right on the back" deals. With Game Genie
you really had to pull to get that thing out. Maybe it was the developers
way of getting you to exercise a little, who knows.
All in all the Game Genie was a necessity to any 7 year old kid who just
couldn't get to the next dungeon level in the Immortal, or get the next
level up in Willow. Also the Game Genie paved the way for game "enhancers"
of today like the GameShark (which I hate for I have changed my cheating
ways).
Well that's about it, and I shall be back with more retro reviews!
