My Gamecube Story...

I'll start with 10:30, Saturday night. After playing some games on the
OLD consoles, we left for the mall. I was surprised to see so many cars
there but then remembered there was a movie theater in this mall…So we
got to Gamestop at about 11:00. There were about 6 other people just waiting
there. We stood around for a while and an employee asks me my name and
I have to tell him like 3 times. This is the same guy that asked me if
I knew who made monkey ball about a month ago when I finished up my preorders.
Then another guy in seemingly Gap apparel starts talking to me. Apparently
he's a big fan of Xbox. I told him I wasn't going to buy a new system
for just Halo and he didn't say much. Later he said the GC games he played
at Target couldn't compete with the DOA3's and…I don't know some other
crummy game. I now realized why he thought the Indigo gamecube looked
fruity. Oh he works at Gamespot and I said how cool those shirts are (lying)
and he said he could get me one for free…I never got one.

So we each went for a walk (in groups of 2) while the other 2 waited.
I figured I have one preordered; I don't care if I'm right up front. When
my friend Casey and I went down the elevator, I wondered why people never
stand directly next to the door. So I did. Luckily a janitor was right
next to the door too and he seemed a little perplexed. Some other dumb
stuff happened and we went back. There were more people there. Some guy
behind me was talking and I ended up getting in on his conversation…with
himself. He asked if I got called and that people that get called can
get a GC. I never got called. Apparently Gamestop only got 24 cubes. But
I figured I made my preorder almost a year ago (finalizing the color a
month ago) so I should be set. Well the tally was about 28 people when
they opened the doors to us. 3 of which were my friends who were just
there to watch.

After a half hour, I finally made it in, Casey following, taking up someone
else's spot. I noticed DOA3 in the corner and thought it would be funny
if all 4 of us just had a DOA3 tournament while everyone else waited.
That didn't happen. Luckily I got my cube, spice controller, memory card,
and Waverace to top off my Rogue Leader at home. I got out pretty quickly.
My other friend Adam told me that someone that left while I was in there
was put on 2nd shipment and it looked like he was going to cry. He then
said if that happened to me, he would "laugh so hard." What
a great friend.

Well I got it and left all those other people to wait for their verdict
on whether or not they get a Cube. Adam and I went to my house as the
other 2 didn't end up coming over. I should really mention the pain of
trying to open a controller case without a sharp object in a car. So I
just opened the console box…which I should have done in the first place.
The black cube is damned slick and for the first time, I held the controller.
It's just damned near perfect. The z trigger is a little awkward but not
that big a deal. The c stick felt a lot more natural than I thought. Yeah
the d-pad is small but I'll have to play Tony hawk 3 before I complain
about it. When I was finally able to play the damned thing, I had to set
the calendar and such. I know the Xbox interface is all technofied and
spiffy but damn I love the GC interface. I had fun setting the time and
stuff…but then I had to play a game. Of course continuing this story would
spoil any upcoming review so in conclusion: that boy at GameStop with
the blue hat and the goatee was not a boy at all.
