Devil May Cry 2
Being a big fan of the original I was very excited to get my hands on the sequel. Now after playing both of the games stories through there entirety, I must say I am both pleased and disappointed.
The game play in DVC2 is essentially the same as its predecessor. You run around using sweet attacks between guns and swords while killing tons of demons. You can still pull off moves from the first such as juggling demons using your guns and double jumping, but Capcom has also thrown in some new tricks. For instance, now you can run along side of walls, or straight up them. This technique is great when your are being cornered by demons and need a quick escape. Another nice trick is the ability to aim at two different enemies while shooting or throwing daggers (depending who you play with) by using the two analog sticks. (Tres Chic)
This time around you can even choose to play as bad arse demon slayer Dante or mysterious beautiful Lucia. They are essentially the same in attacks, they just do them in different fashions. Lucia has the power to transform into a demon just like Dante causing for major damage. Relics can be found that add special moves to the demon form such as flight, fire, and super speed. The red orbs are back which can be collected through the stage and used to buy items or to upgrade weapons. The action in this game is top notch but even so DVC2 suffers from its problems and unfortunately they are some rather big ones.
The first is the story, or there lack of. After playing Dante’s quest I was confused on what I had been fighting for, and after playing with Lucia I realized there wasn’t very much, nor very good of a story anyway. Nowhere near the quality of the first game. Also the game is very……VERY easy. I completed Dante’s quest in less than 5 hours and Lucia’s in fewer than 3. A lot of the stages are really short and though there are a few challenges, it’s nowhere near as challenging as the first which was very short as well but a lot more challenging.
With these two problems, unless you would like to have it for your collection DVC2 would do best as a rental. You’ll finish both quest and still have three days till it’s due back.
Graphics: The graphics look nice, not too much different from the first game and some of the stages are a bit bland.
Sound: The first few times you encounter enemies the battle music is exciting, but there is nothing worth buying the music cd. (Would have been nice for some gothic style chorus vocals.)
Control: As simple as playing the first game with a few additions that quickly becomes second nature.
Game Play: The Hong Kong style action is as fun as it always has been. I have never had so much fighting enemies in a game before. DVC2 took what was great about DVC1 game play and added to it. Unfortunately the game ends too quickly. Powering up is nice but with such a short quest it’s not a must.
Replay: The two different characters and difficulties may have you going at it again, but probably just to do a few wall jumps.
Score: 3 out of 5
