The next Xbox: Xbox Next?

IGN recently reported that the name of Xbox 2 seems to be "Xbox Next". But even more interesting is the fact Microsoft said it intends to launch Xbox Next BEFORE PlayStation 3 does.

In recent generations, popular consoles have typically lasted 5 years, and everyone assumed the same would continue. Coming out before PS3 would indicate a launch in 2005 (when PS2 will be 5 years old). Only a 4 year gap? This is opposite Nintendo who has hinted GC might last longer then the 5 year span. MSFT is gearing up for a heads on battle with Sony next generation it seems. And with the overwhelming success of Live, who knows.

Also mentioned was that Xbox Next would incorprate a few "non-gaming" functions like its current DVD movie function. Next will incorpate Microsoft's Ultimate TV technology which includes digital recording (like a TiVo) and web surfing abilities. It has been rumored though it might cost 400 dollars too. Ouch, but its a long ways off yet. These extras seem cool, but let's hope the main focus, gaming, isn't lost.

In the meantime, Xbox might see a drop in price to 130-150 in the next year, and we still might see ReplayTV and web surfing add-ons for the system within the next two years.

Oh yeah, information on the name "Xbox Next" comes oddly from the Hollywood Reporter. But if you need more, Microsoft recently registered the "xboxnext.com" domain name.
