The History of NBrid Part I
No summary available.
Written by: Hybrid
Some of you may remember the "History of NBrid so Far" story that I posted on the short-lived NBrid Gaiden. I figure, this being the one year anniversary of NBrid, I should make a more updated one for newer members or people that just want to know how this all started. Note that a lot of this is in the previous History story but if you skim closely, you'll also find a more complete version of the history of NBrid.
Around early 2000, the official Sega rooms in irc.sega.com were becoming boring and extremely strict. Nothing ever really went on in there and it seemed everyone wanted to create their own room and be "cool". I on the other hand had just failed with #midway as a party room and changed my nick to Hybrid. I made #hybrid a place to meet up with friends instead of losers that just idle. So one day I go into #sonic and see this guy with the nick "Dolphin". I ask him if that's the mammal or the code-named Nintendo system. Long story short, we start the room #dolphin and decide we're going to get a whole bunch of people to come in and we can finally have a decent conversation about Dolphin. (By the way, Dolphin's regular nickname was Eienhandr.) As the night passes (basically 10 minutes later), Tidings comes in. Funny thing...he wasn't invited. He said he'd join and we talked for a little while. I'm not sure but I think Weapon came in next (from the old #midway parties). More people came in but eventually it was just us 4. We started this thing called the "Dolphin Raid" spelling out the word Dolphin in 4 different ways (changing the I's and L's around).
At the time, becoming a part of "the Dolphins" just meant that you could have Ops in #hybrid. Having past experience with people taking over my room, we (me and Eien) decided to question members first. All answers were stored in the channel's memoserver. I'm not going to go through all the members that joined because if you look on the member list, you probably won't notice any of them. Each member has his own story and there just isn't enough time to tell them all :(. But the first major change in NBrid was the disappearance of Eienhandr. To this day I have no idea what happened to him, why he never emailed me, or what might of happened if he had come back.
So I'm left with this new group alone. But back then we didn't even have 10 members and keeping this altogether wasn't too hard. I'll forego the addition of ClashBrothers I remember the little meeting we had (and I mean LITTLE) in #hybrid where we had to change the name of "the Dolphins". I remember Tidings either supported my first idea of NBrid or he came up with it himself...Anyway we were worried about it sounding like Inbreed, but I didn't care. NBrid was born.
More members join and the only way I keep track of them is by the access list. I remember Sinister offers to do the website for us...let's forget about this altogether. One night no one is in #hybrid (in fact, back then I was usually the only one in there for a while) and I go exploring rooms. I go to #playstation2, maybe trying to prove to myself I can win any argument maybe because I was very bored, and meet some guy named BoneStorm. I didn't even realize it was named after the game from a certain Simpsons episode. I don't remember any of the stuff we talked about...maybe Bone does, but I noticed he's also in #nintendo. Any of you used to IRC chat and creating your own room will remember trying to get other rooms to put your room name in each other's topic. By this time, we had about 5 rooms doing this for me. Long story short, BoneStorm "phases" into NBrid and happened to be at some of our meetings.
I remember the topic of a website came up and Weapon volunteered. I think Bone was also interested so he made a site too. Well...Weapon's site was...decent, and Bone's was pretty good. Eventually I start talking to Bone more and we work on the site together. All I really did at first was supply one crappy logo. This was all happening around the end of the summer, so I wanted to get NBridNet 2.0 done by then. We worked through emails and chat and in about 3 weeks, it was done.
[So what happened in NBrid next? Was it a success, or a complete failure? You'll have to stay tuned for: The History of NBrid Part II. Coming next week Tuesday...]
