Yeah, I hate this "canon" look for Samus. I don't mind the design of the leotard/catsuit from Zero Mission (considering in every other 2D game she was in some form of futuristic swimsuit), but it's the stupid haircut they keep giving her. I can appretiate if they're trying to do something more interesting than a normal ponytail (though I always imagined her with short hair), but the overly-long side bang things, goofy fringe and high-sitting knot just looks terrible.
I think they hit the nail on the head in the original Metroid Prime, where at the end she just took her helmet off for some fresh air, really, and bam: a pretty-yet-fairly-normal-looking chick in a spacesuit. Then I guess in the sequel Retro must've gotten pressure from higher up because, lo and behold, at the end was the arbitary panning shot of the now-accepted blue leotard and crappy hairdo Samus. I sort of get the idea they're trying to turn her into Nintendo's Lara Croft.
