Death to the Arcade?
By:ConnDestn
Back in the hay day of gaming there was a place where people gathered. A place
where strangers met and in a twist of fate, became virtual enimies. A place where you
could play such classics as "Time Killers" and "Pit Fighter". Known as the "Waste
Space" to adults, but to video game freaks it was known as an Arcade. When you had a
pocketful of quarters and was done trying to get that certain item in the toy bubble gum-esque unit, the arcade was the first thing on your mind. And a great place it was. It seems
lately the arcade has lost its spot in gamer's hearts and is slowly dwindling down to the
status of former game company Data East.
While investigating the matter, I've come upon
a few things that might have led to this tragic forthcomming.
1. A social demise: People just can't stand each other
anymore. Hearing someone yell at their opponent "Who's your daddy!" while pummeling
their palette swapped enemy might have been fun to hear at first, but lately it's just plain
old annoying. People have chosen their enemies and friends, and no longer seem to
care to find anymore. Schedules are just too busy these days what with work, school,
girlfriends, and after school sleep sessions.
2. Why go out for milk when you have the cow at home:
At one point in time, arcade games were superior to those on home consoles, but starting
with such systems as the Playstation and now with the PS2, GameCube, and XBox; the
home console has equaled if not surpassed the graphics and ingeuity of the arcade.
Why would one go out to the arcade if what they have at home is better? Along with this,
only your more famous arcades in your city or town get many new games. If it wasn't for
the occasional fighter from either Capcom or Namco or their Dance Dance Revolution
games, there would be next to nobody still at a cade. (cade = arcade)
So what does this tell us? Maybe nothing. That's the beauty of my articles. : )
Seriously though, unfortuantely time is running short for the cade. Maybe with the
introduction of Nintendo's new Triforce arcade board (partnered with Capcom and Namco) will come new and exciting games that will
draw gamers back to the arcade. I'm sure Soul Calibur 2 will bring some, but for how
long? It seems when it's all over for gaming, it will end exactly where it began... at home.
