IGNinsider: WWF WrestleMania X8 Announced
Exclusive: THQ announces the GCN exclusive wrestler, featuring your favorite WWF, WCW and ECW stars.
January 24, 2002
Last summer THQ announced that it had a WWF Wrestling game in the works for GameCube. Finally, after almost six months the company has announced WWF WrestleMania X8, developed by Japanese-based Yuke's of Smackdown fame. The biggest news regarding WWF WrestleMania X8 is that it carries the full World Wrestling Federation license and will feature superstars from the former WCW and ECW, giving WWF WrestleMania X8 the most complete selection of wrestlers ever featured. THQ's Executive Vice President, Alison Locke commented, "Since 1999, THQ has sold more than two million copies of World Wrestling Federation branded titles for the Nintendo 64 alone. We are very excited to be continuing the strong tradition of World Wrestling Federation games on Nintendo systems with WWF WrestleMania X8."
Stephan Berman, president of JAKKS Pacific stated, "WrestleMania has literally changed the face of wrestling throughout the years. We are very confident that fans everywhere will appreciate the realism and detail that is put into this videogame as it delivers all of the excitement and rich tradition of this classic event."
The Rock says he looks good on the TitanTron. WWF WrestleMania X8 will feature more than 35 superstars, pulling talent from the current WWF. The developers promise the game will include top wrestlers such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H, and ex-WCW and ECW stars Booker T, Rob Van Dam, DDP, The Hurricane, and more. Finally gamers will be able to choose from a crop of wrestlers without being limited by licenses. Each character has their own unique wrestling style and a full repertoire of special finishing moves. If the available wrestlers aren't enough for you, WWF WrestleMania X8 comes with a fully featured Create-A-Superstar mode so you can design the ultimate grappler. The customization heavy mode will let you tweak appearance, costumes, special moves, and more.
There's no finalized number of modes or match types yet, but Yuke's indicates Hardcore, Tornado Tag, and Triple Threat matches are just a glimpse of things to come. Furthermore, exclusive to WWF Wrestlemania X8, the game will feature Championship Road, where you can take your rookie wreslter to the top in effort to grab a championship belt. The action will be highlighted by a television-style presentation to heighten the sense of realism. Cinematic camera angles and dynamic pans, varied lighting effects, a full range of pyrotechnics, and the obligatory camera flashes from the crowd will put you into the ring. Additionally, the TitanTron will be there to accompany wrestler entrances with signature video reels and music.
What? What's my watch say? WrestleMania X8, due to be released this summer 2002, will feature a grappling system very akin to the those released for Nintendo 64. IGNcube will have a full hands-on report tomorrow. The game is reportedly around 50% complete, so bear in mind the visuals seen in the screens is only going to get better.
