News: AOL, Nintendo's Preferred Choice For Online
Developers who choose to create online games for GameCube (no one so far except Sega) will be licensed AOL connectivity software enabling their games to connect online through the usually sluggish AOL service. This also applies to any potential online GameCube software it decides to make in the future, although today they say no first party online titles are in development yet and doesn't change their strategy. "To be clear, this does not indicate the unveiling of a new online gaming approach from Nintendo. Nor does it signify that we have changed our position on the current business viability in the online console gaming field."
Any products would be spotlighted on AOL and Time Warner websites to promote AOL's new broadband service, including a possibility of bundling AOL demo discs with the GameCube. I'm sure many Nintendo fans are going to be upset by the choice because of America Online's poor reputation for internet at not-so blazing speeds among other things. But not many companies have the infrastructure to support something like this. We'll have to wait and see what comes of it.

| God, I hate AOL. If you never had a reason to hate it before, you should now...there's no way you're gonna get a stable gaming community over AOL. I don't think this is such a hot plan. |

| Sure AOL sucks, but it's not like people have to use it to get online with whatever Nintendo is planning. AOL will be providing the servers and in case you didnt know, they use the same ones that Roadrunner use (Time Warner company) which are some of the best broadband servers around. I think it's going to be extremely lame finding AOL preview discs in my future Nintendo games and consoles though. I thought I escaped this when I moved to college. Well, as long as people arent forced to subscribe to AOL and a competent team manages these future online services, this isn't really a bad thing. |
