Pay for PSO
On the eve of SegaNet's new pay-for-play plan, FearTheClown looks at how the pay-for-pay plan has affected PSO v.2 on DC. Is pay-for-play really such a bad thing? PSO v.2 - Is Pay-to-Play Really so Bad?

Custom Robo on GC?
It seems likely now that its developer, Noise, confirmed that they are currently experimenting with development. The staff has a strong desire to continue the Custom Robo series. For all of you that don't know, Noise was a contract developer for Marigul but it's rumored that the contract has expired. The US never got a custom robo game even though it had a ton of potential to sell well on N64. Think of it as a customizable Virtual On RPG.

GameCube Hard Drive Card
The publication Genken Ascii has revealed that there will be portable IBM hard disk card for the Nintendo GameCube, which can be inserted into the NGC’s high speed port. The IBM card is about the size of a floppy disk with a max capacity seemingly of 1GB. The device can act as an expansion of A memory.

Memory shortages?
The standard Nintendo Memory Card 59 will be shipping in a 1 to 1 ratio with the GameCube. What does that mean, exactly? Well it means that for every GameCube shipped, one Memory Card 59 will be shipped. According to Tendo Box, most retailers will also only be selling the Memory Card 59 on a one to one basis. So unless you plan on buying more than 1 GameCube, you won't be able to get more than one Memory card 59. More memory cards will become available a week or two after launch. Do not buy 3rd party cards!

Tony's final headline here...
Yes it was confirmed by Activision today, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 WILL make launch. Of course a lot of you will be getting this on PS2 but the GC game is a direct port.

TMNT (NES)
The TMNT were arguably the most popular and lucrative franchise in the late 80's and early 90's. It expanded into almost everything it possibly could, and this included videogames. The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) game was quite different from the TMNT Arcade games most of us know.

Demo in Luigi's Mansion?
GameSpot has just received final GameCube packaging from Nintendo for the system and games and posted several pictures of them. In one picture of the Luigi’s Mansion box, many readers noticed on the back, in the bottom right hand above the UPC Code is a small box with the following caption:

"Includes demo rated E by the ESRB"

It’s not unheard of for developers to include demos of upcoming games on an additional disc bundled along with the game. This would be the first time a demo was actually packaged as part of the game, like an “extra” feature seen on movie DVDs.

Say goodbye to online DC gaming...
Sega has announced starting Nov. 1 they will charge a flatfee of $10/month to play games on its SegaNet servers. This applies to any DC game that is played on a SegaNet server (which is most). PSO is on separate servers so it won't be affected (PSO will still be free and PSO v.2 will still have its own pay-for-play plan). This just adds fuel to the fire to those still miffed over Shenmue 2's cancellation.

Once thought of as an Xbox exclusive, Cel Damage will now appear on the GameCube as well. Around mid-December, gamers will be able to tackle the cel-shaded, car-combat game. Included in the game will be 10 different characters, 30 weapons, and 12 levels that should take advantage of the GameCube's hardware.

Activision support rises
Publisher Activision held a conference call today to discuss its fiscal quarter 2002 plans and projects for next year. The company announced that it was under development with 65 projects for release between April 2002 and March 2003, of which 16 would ship for Nintendo's next-generation console. The firm noted that 16 would also be released for Xbox, and 19 for Sony's PlayStation 2.
The company said that going into 2002 and 2003 it would continue to develop its extreme sports franchises, with probable sequels to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX, and others. The company also said it would release games based on the Spider-Man, Blade and X-Men movies.

Now is the time to preorder folks
Well I got confirmation that my measly 10 bucks from last december WILL gurantee me a GameCube at launch (midnight) and I dont have to get a gay bundle. The fact that this is GameStop makes it even more surprising. However, the guy told me the obvious in saying youve gotta preorder games now because they will be going fast. My suggestion is preorder everything you plan on buying at launch. And if you plan on getting melee or pikmin, try to preorder it before the end of October unless you like camping out (well that DOES sound fun but getting a game at midnight seems better). I plan on picking up waverace and rogue leader at launch. If Tony Hawk 3 is a launch game, I'll get that too. I'd think hard about getting Luigi's Mansion because it really doesnt seem like it will last you more than the standard 2 weeks. Super Monkey Ball would be a good buy if you plan on getting 3 controllers with your GC or you happened to play the arcade version. I'll save my opinions on it for later. Speaking of controllers, preorder an extra one. Even if you camp out, getting an extra controller will be one pain in the ass. I remember waiting like 2 months to get a 1st party DC controller and I got that one online. The word of the month: preorder! Oh and save some money for Xbox if you wish. *snicker*

TGS never really was that fun...
Here are the somewhat interesting details of the GC pressence at the Tokyo Game Show this year. Note: I'm only posting new info.

Wow Entertainment is developing Major League Baseball 2003 and the game will be published by Sega.
From Software showed off Gold Star Mountain to the public for the first time. Not much is known about this game yet.
Ascii's controller/keyboard combo for GameCube is planned to ship at or near the same time as Phantasy Star Online ver. 2 on GameCube. It looks funky.
Sega of Japan has announced that it will release a port of Skies of Arcadia (called Eternal Arcadia in Japan) for the GameCube as well as the PlayStation 2 sometime in 2002.

Galleon Semi Exclusive
I'm sure no one is really talking about this game right now but, by the original developer of Tomb Raider, it should be a pretty original title. Publisher Interplay told IGNcube this week that the Confounding Factor developed Galleon: Islands of Mystery has been rescheduled from its tentatively set 2001 debut to March 2002. The game will appear on GameCube before any other console and remain exclusive for two-to-three months before an Xbox version is released. No PS2 incarnation is currently planned.

Sega says goodbye to DC, and hello to XBox!
It's official! Shenmue 2 has indeed been cancelled for DC (US) and will instead be made as a first party game for XBox. This is just the latest and greatest insult by Sega to its loyal fans on the DC. They also announced PSO for XBox to go along with the already announced JGR Future, Gun Valkyrie, Sega GT 2002, Panzer Dragoon, and the Sega Sports games. There is an interesting interview on IGNDC where a Sega rep tries in vain to explain their move from DC to XBox.

More on Square
Recent quotes suggest that Square will be exclusive to PS2 in their new agreement but still intend on making games for GBA and WonderSwan. They do not believe developing for handhelds will conflict with developing for consoles or A console. However if Sony made a portable system, that would be a different story. So anyone see Will Ferrel playing Kessen on Undeclared tonight? Pretty good ep...err go GameCube.

Square sells out
Well not exactly but Sony has just invested in Square, planning to pay 14.9 yen ($124 million) for 19 percent of Square. This investment helps Square bounce back from terrific losses following the Final Fantasy movie but also practically ensures Square games won’t be appearing on anything but PS2. So much for multi platform gaming. However we don't know all the details of their contract yet...

Another delay...
Well its not too bad because its a game that comes out the same day as Pikmin and Smash Bros Melee (easily the 2 best 1st party games coming out this year). Yes Eternal Darkness has internally been delayed from its previously rescheduled December 3 release date to "late February or early March," according to insiders. Silicon Knights is expected to use the extra time to polish the game up before its 2002 debut. Speaking of Smash Bros though, some very interesting news has been posted at IGNCube today. But if you dont want to hear it, all I will say is "Nintendo has created a virtual archive of all its past work and thrown it into Smash Bros. Melee. It is by definition a retro Nintendo lover's dream come true."

To the Amazon and back in 5 minutes.
Amazon.com started to take GameCube preorders earlier today and by all accounts sold out of its supply in less than five minutes. They're asking its customers to "check back on October 18" to try and preorder again. Amazon is selling a GameCube bundle that includes the indigo or jet black colored system, a memory card, and copies of Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2 and Madden NFL 2002, for approximately $399.99.

Bloody Roaring
Bloody Roar Extreme has been confirmed for GameCube in 2002. It's not yet clear whether Extreme will be an enhanced version of Bloody Roar 3, which was recently released for PS2, or a completely new sequel to the series. Veteran Nintendo supporter Hudson is apparently the publisher.

Q
The GameCube/DVD combo will officially be marketed under the brand name ‘Q’. The company is presently partaking in the CEATEC expo, a Japanese event which allows participants to demonstrate and reveal their current and latest incarnations revolving around technology and IT systems.

It will be on display in the Panasonic booth under the slogan "play or view" obviously meaning play movies or view games...it should retail for the yen equivalent of $291.

Starfox not as much like Zelda as it appears
 Source: IGNCube

Earlier this week at Nintendo's Gamers' Summit show in Los Angeles, company gaming guru Ken Lobb told IGNcube that the versions of Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet in rotation since E3 are barely representative of the final product. "It's not as much of a Zelda game as people think," Lobb noted, and went on to liken the game to Contra, saying that Rare's action-adventure similarly features many different modes of varied play -- some that we still haven't witnessed.

Portable cubin
Today InterAct announced its Mobile Monitor 5.4 and companion battery pack for GameCube. The monitor is 5.4 inches diagonally and hooks into the back of the GC (helping make a little more sense of that handle in back). The battery will power both the system and the screen for about 2.5 hours. The screen will hit store shelves at launch with a $150 price tag and the battery retailing for $50. With GameCube itself costing $200, I doubt it will even do as well as PS1's LCD screen but over time it could be interesting.

SA2 More than just a port
The GC version of SA2 will be renamed "Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" mainly because the GameCube version will have completely reworked multiplayer modes. Add to that an improved framerate of 60 fps over the DC's 30 fps, improved graphics, and the ability to link up with Sonic Advance on GBA for chao breeding and kart racing. The game will hit Japanese shelves December 20th.
