Resident Evil: The Movie, based off the classic Capcom game series.
The movie takes place half a mile underground of Raccoon City in a place called the Hive. A group of military commandos are sent to investigate an 'incident' that recently occurred. Clueless as they are as to what's happened; they're about to run into hordes of flesh eating zombies, some not so friendly (but still cute in a sick way) inside-out dogs, and of course, a 'friendly' licker here or there. Oh, and let's not forget about the super computer who controls the Hive who decides to have a hologram of herself as a little bitchy girl with a British accent.
The main heroine is played by Milla Jovo-something (that chick from the 5th Element), and she plays the part well. Calm, coordinated, has no idea of her past, you know, typical heroine. (Side Note: Even if you think you'll hate this movie, Milla gets naked, twice.)
The previews for this movie don't really do it justice. Seeing someone kicking a dog and the title Resident Evil right after doesn't really go over to well with many gamers or myself. Let me be the first to say that scene looks really good in the movie. The action scenes where they don't use guns are done pretty well, except it just doesn't seem very sensible when a couple of them decide to have a game of fisticuffs with 20 or 30 zombies. All in all, plenty of bullets to zombies heads, plenty of death. Everything you could want in a zombie shoot-em-up fest. Sheesh, even a good story.
Special effects are done well. Matrix style bullets slow down and such, but this happens maybe too often. Zombies look pretty good except for the few who look almost human. I guess it depends on if they've been mauled by a fellow zombie (not too friendly eh) or not. The dogs look really good even though they are inside-out. Oh, and well, Milla looks really good too.
Since this is a zombie flick, there are plenty of them. Zombies have severed limbs. A couple of them walk around on the side of the foot. You see zombies get shot in the head. Some get chopped to bits with an axe. There was enough gore for me, but maybe not some people.
There isn't gore in the traditional spurting blood fashion. The thing with bleeding is this: The zombies are dead. Dead things have coagulated blood which means it can't gush out (this is explained in the movie). When most of the people get killed it's in the 'laser' scene. I'm sure everyone has heard that there isn't any bleeding in that because the laser would burn the nerves and blood vessels closed so it wouldn't bleed.
In the end, this is an excellent movie that most people will like except for really huge fans of the game. Problem is there are some things in the movie that are 'Hollywooded-up' that would never be in the game. See this movie with an open mind. From a movie standpoint this is one of the best horror movies ever. Oh yeah, I can't wait for the sequel. Milla gets naked! It's worth it just for that!
