Virtua Fighter 4

The best fighting game ever made, simply put. I'm willing to bet that the people that gave this master piece a rating lower than 3 overall have not given this game a FAIR chance. They must not know how deep this game really is because only a person that has played it for a while would know. This is the type of fighting game that you wont master in a month and not even in a year. I think that reviewers (Negative Ones) must be frustrated because they obviously can't smash p,p,k and get a combo to come out of it, unlike the DOA series and the Tekken series. Here you have to master a fighting style and the hundreds of attacks for ONE single character. Then comes throws, reversals, counters, double counters, deflections, blocking, stagger recovery, floor recovery
ect. You name it and it's here. All the characters play extremely different from one another. One character in this game equals that of 4 in another game because they have a HUGE command list, and their different fighting stances means more strategy for both defense and offense.
Gameplay: The controls are perfect and dead on. If you know what you're doing then you can easily control these characters like if they were a part of your hand. Veteran players of the series will feel right at home with the P, K, G setup and the 3-way movement is a nice welcome for new players of the series. Don't get me wrong here. To master this game and controls fully you MUST be patient or you won't get anywhere. If you give up in your first 10 minutes then you got NO WHERE and simply ignored this game. Giving 10 minutes to this game is a joke. This game needs months and years of devotion or you won't accomplish a thing.
Graphics: Very realistic looking and very mature. This is no DOA 3 but this game has the graphics of what a real fighting game should look like. Think of them much like Street Fighter 3 Third strike + Ultimate Fighting Championship, of course with some jaggies in the background but they are in no way going to distract you when you fight because it's not much of a problem unless you stop and look closely or during an intro to a level. The effects are very nice as well from the water-covered arena to lightning destroying stones and snow being kicked from your character's feet into your opponent's face. Some backgrounds could use a little work depending on the stage, but most of them are very well done because they have a different style and form much like the characters in the game.
Sound: I won't have to go into detail here because the sound gets the job done and it's more then adequate.
Lasting Appeal: If you have what it takes and have the patience you will enjoy this masterpiece for YEARS. I guarantee it. But if youre one of those people who just likes button smashing and story lines then look elsewhere. With the Kumite mode you can unlock over 400 items for your character and give them a very different look from what your friend's character would look like when both of you load up your player data. The fighting in kumite mode is endless and you'll keep fighting new opponents most of the time. The fighters found in kumite mode is actually made from game data of people that play in the tournaments in Japan. You can even train your own A.I. character to fight in kumite mode with replays that you provide and actual sparring that you do with your own A.I. character. Something very interesting and unique. Talking about A.I., this game has hands down the best A.I. over any other fighting game ever made and gives you a challenge until its last breath. The A.I. in this game is the next best thing to fighting an actual human opponent. You won't be disappointed.
