For gaming underachievers, this is the game that will confirm your
low self esteem. For the rest of you, prepare for an ego breakdown.
Graphics: The graphics in this game are the kind that make you
proud to own a Dreamcast. All of the characters are animated nicely
with GREAT wrapping shadows and nice lighting effects. The bosses in
this game are HUGE, and are all very unique in their appearance. The
landscapes are simply breath taking. Ranging from a spaceship high above
Canada(!), to high tech alien cities. This is one of those games that
makes you keep playing just to see what lies around the next corner.
All of the weapons in the game have been given their own distinct look
as well. Be it the atomic toaster, or the black hole grenade.
Sound: This is another department that the game shines in. The
music is very appropriate with poundong techno beats that really pick
up when the action gets going. All of the sound effects are good too.
From the sound of shells hitting the ground, aliens taunting you in
their own alien gibberish, or the sound of your ribbon chute as you
glide to the ground. The voices are nicely done, and they give the game
a sort of 50's B movie feel. The only complaint I have with the sound
fx was for some reason the developers felt it would be a good idea to
include HUNDREDS OF FARTS, and while funny at first, this gets very
annoying.
Gameplay: This is where the game really shines. There are 3
playable characters. Max the 4 armed robotic dog, Dr Hawkins the crazy
Scientist, and Kurt Hectic mild mannered space janitor (MDK get it).
Each character has his own style of game play. Kurt represents the stealthy
sniper part of the game, Max with his ability to hold 4 guns is the
mindless shooter aspect, and Dr Hawkins is the puzzle part. The control
is similar to Quake in that you use the action buttons to move, the
analog stick to look around, the L and R triggers to jump and fire respectively,
and the D-pad to select items/weapons. The control is responsive for
the most part ,but it can be frustrating to make some of the numerous
jumps in the game especially in the Dr. Hawkins section. Also the game
is so DAMN HARD. There were points in which I was stuck for days because
I couldn't find a door or I was low on health
Replay: Replay value? What replay value. There are no rewards
for beating the game. The only reward I can think of is if you make
it through the game with out breaking your T.V.
DIFFICULTY: The difficulty level in this game is through the
roof. Casual gamers stay away. This one is strictly for the hardcore.
There is no difficulty setting here, the game is locked on Ultra Hard
and you can't change it..
Overall: Despite the difficulty, this is one of the best Dreamcast
games out there. Anyone looking for a challenge should turn here.
