Smash Brothers, the most anticipated
game of my life and the one which has brought the most enjoyment. This
game has not received the recognition it deserves. It got great reviews,
but it deserves a review from someone who has played this game from the
day it launched to 2day. I'll try my best to capture it all.
Gameplay: Usually a fighter
has hyper combos and giant full screen effects, but this is not your average
fighter. In fact, i don't even consider this a fighter. It has the feel
of a single staged Kirby game (also made by Hal Labs) with the addition
of the most popular mascots around. The control is almost perfect, but
performing too many smash moves may ruin the responsiveness of your controller,
as I have learned. The learning curve is about 2 minutes, unless you suck
at all games. I beat it on day 1 easily, and I was disappointed. Then
I play versus and kick the crap out of Pikachu. Ahhh, how fulfilling...and
with Kirby no less. Since I love all Kirby games, (Kirby64 wasn't so great
though) I love this game. As I was saying, the control is almost perfect
which makes for a small learning curve. However, a novice will not be
able to take on a team of 3 level 9 opponents with a handicap of
1. It takes practice, getting to know each stage, perfecting your smash
moves, and a few personal strategies to accomplish this. Some people will
complain that there are no combos in this game. I MAKE MY OWN COMBOS!
How about the fist's o furry to a back flip kick to final cutter move?
Or why not reverse it? The best part about this game is you can beat people
up like you would in real life...without being able to jump on air. If
you ignore past rules of previous fighters and just accept this game is
fun as hell, you realize it deserves a 10/10.
Replay: I beat the game,
let's return it. YOU MORON! Did you unlock every character, the bonus
arena, item select, and music mode? Did you complete every bonus stage
for each character? How about playing for hours trying to top those scores?
Have you gone to practice to see which move takes the highest percentage
from your opponent? What about reading the profiles for each character
and seeing them move around...ok that one takes about 5 minutes. This
game's replay mostly stems from the 4 player mode and almost no slowdown.
I had plenty fun alone, but it's always fun to show how much your cousins
suck. Yet another replay factor is making your own combos. I mentioned
one earlier, but one of my favorite moves (with Kirby of course) is the
suicide swallow. Lure your opponent off the edge, suck him up and take
the plunge as you hear your friend scream NOO and hear "GAME SET".
This game just how so much for you to keep interested, even though it
may seem like you have nothing left to do. So it receives a 9/10.
Graphics: I honestly could
care less about graphics, but the explosions are fantastic. the low poly
characters are ok because it lowers slowdown. In short, the graphics are
perfect for this type of game, but not amazing. 7/10.
Sound: Man, hearing old Nintendo
tunes brings back memories of NES. The sound effects are also well done.
Again, perfect for this type of game, but probably could be better. Just
turn on your favorite cd. 8/10.
Ingenuity and Everything else:
This game sets new standards for fighting games. It is more fun than any
fighting game and happens to be my favorite game ever made. To put in
perspective, I bought this game in April 99, and bought Soul Calibur in
November. I no longer play Soul Calibur, but still play Smash brothers
once in a while. Being able to knock another player off the platform and
let the match drag out is much more fun in my opinion than killing your
opponent in 20 seconds. As for everything else, the sheer amount of moves
that can be executed on your victims makes this game fun. I can have my
team mate "pitch" me Donkey Kong so I may hit a home run. OR,
I can use a grab move on him and let my team mate lay the smack down gangsta
style. You like your knees? Too bad. The list is endless and Id be happy
to post one by request. 10/10
To be brief, this game kicks ass
and will only be topped by online play, more characters, and a microphone
to talk smack to people online. I can't wait for the sequel. If I was
to rate this game on how much fun I had alone like SOME people, I would
not be a very good editor. It would get a 101. But since it has it's slight
faults (which are forgettable after about 2 seconds), I give this game
a 97/100.
If you ever wanted to kill a Pokemon
or like videogames for God's sake, BUY THIS GAME.
I cannot be defeated so easily!
