Videogames: The Movie

Its kinda like when a bill becomes a law, only the outcome is much more
evil. Over the years the most popular video game franchises have been
turned into a movie. Most have ended up in tragedy while few are as good
as the game it originated from. Let me take you back. Back to a time where
the theaters are disappointing many of movie goers, by showing the next
videogame/movie.
Super Mario Bros.
The Movie
--------------
This movie is arguably what started the game into movie band wagon. The
movie was based on one of the most popular video game franchises to date.
The game starred Bob Hoskins as the plumply Mario, and John Leguizamo
as the taller Luigi. The Mario Bros games have always been filled with
nonstop fantasy elements which would make a direct game to movie translation
to be very hard unless it was a cartoon, yet someone in this world decided
to make it live action using a story very separate from the games. The
movie involved the Mario Bros as they try to rescue a young princess Daisy
in a futuristic underworld where evolution is continuing. The ruler of
the world is none other then King Koopa (Dennis Hopper) who with his to
nephews Ziggy and Iggy are causing all sorts of trouble. This movie was
just mostly silly. Favorite creatures like the Goombas somehow made it
in a human/lizard form, and even Toad made it, although he was soon Goombafied.
It's not like the movie was filled with bad acting, it was just filled
with bad ideas. Somehow they even managed to sneak in a Yoshi and Bomb-bombs.
Super Mario Bros. is one of those games that shouldn't have been made
into a movie, until the CGI was at the level it is today, and then it
should have been a all CGI movie with close ties to the games. The first
blow to the game/movie genre has been given.
Double Dragon
-------------
Oh my freakin Giddy Aunt, what in the free world is this? Double Dragon
is actually one of those games that could have been made into a sweet
martial art flick, yet a crappy piece of Dragon poo is all we get. This
movie is about Billy and Jimmy Lee as they defend the city against the
Shadow Master, and his gang. I'm guessing this movie cost a grand total
of $100 to make. Double Dragon wardrobe: $50. Double Dragon Mobile: $50.
Finding out that Double Dragon will no longer be played in movie theaters:
Priceless. This has to be about the worst of the bunch. The acting was
poor, as well as the special effects. It would have been nice if some
cool karate moves were included, but instead we get a Dragon Bro jumping
into the Shadow Masters body and making him harm himself. If possible,
stay at least 1000000000 miles away from this at all times.
Street Fighter
The Movie
-------------
I'm still trying to figure out which was worse, Double Dragon or Street
Fighter. Based off one of the most popular fighting franchises ever, this
movie reeks of crap. First off you got characters such as Van Damme disgracing
such famous characters as Guile, and then you got Raul Julia (may he rest
in peace) who's playing Bison. It's not that he can't act, but he doesn't
look the part. He's like 200 lbs less than M. Bison. Other characters
were thrown in such as Chun-LI who is a reporter with her camera men,
E-honda and Balrog. What the heazy? Then you got Dhalsim who has magically
turned into a white man, and Blanka who is shown as a deformed Charlie.
Where do they get this stuff? The story was based around Guile who is
trying to take down M. Bison, meanwhile Ryu and Ken are doing their own
thing for kicks. This movie lacked much substance, and the saddest part
is it was the last movie poor Raul Julia ever got to make. I hear he died
before it was finished so at least he didn't have to watch it. It's a
shame Capcom actually had their name on this one.
Mortal Kombat
-------------
Finally we get into the game/movies that were actually good. Based off
the extreme violent franchise, this movie managed to rock at a sweet PG-13
rating. The movie centered around three humans from earth; Liu Kang, Sonya
Blade, and Johnny Cage as they are invited to a tourney in the outworld
to fight for the sake of all humanity. The movie had some sweet fighting
scenes such as the Johnny Cage and Scorpion brawl, and they managed to
make favorite characters such as the ninja's look really cool. The acting
is good, and the music tops it off. This is how a game/movie should be
done. Get some decent special effects, some decent actors, and don't stray
too far away from its roots.
Moral Kombat II
Annihilation
--------------
And now, the movie series hits the toilet harder then taco bell. I don't
quite know what happened but this movie sucked compared to the first one.
Maybe its the fact that the writer tried to cram every character from
every MK game in. This may sound cool at first, but with so many characters
you got to get rid of them soon, and most of them were in the movie for
a good 5 minutes before being killed in some lame manner. The best part
was a fight between Scorpion and Sub-zero, but after it was over, the
ninja's were never seen again. Characters such as Sonya Blade, and Raiden
were given new actors, and not so good ones at that. It's a shame it had
to end like this. It's also a shame the movie ended with actual animalities.
Was that stop motion, CGI, or just crappy Play-Doh?
Tomb Raider
----------
I don't see how this could be screwed up because afterall its nothing
but a female Indiana Jones. It started off okay, but once statues and
crap come to life for no apparent reason, it's all going down the crapper.
Angelina Jolie who plays Lara Croft was a great choice, but even a nominated
actress couldn't save this movie. It just got stupider and stupider. Classic
scenes like the pyramid chase for what looks like the triforce only help
to booty this movie up even more. I tried to just have fun, but it was
hard. Fortunately the Tomb Raider is not a series for which I'm a fan,
so I wasn't as disappointed, as say Mortal Kombat 2. Perhaps if they would
have stolen more ideas from Indiana Jones, then this would have turned
out better. I'm sure many people will argue with this one, but it just
sucked, plain and simple.
Final Fantasy
The Spirits Within
------------------
One of the most popular Rpg franchises in the world finally gets a movie.
Final Fantasy TSW is a pretty good movie. The CGI is really amazing, and
certain characters such as Dr.Sid look so real, its scary. The whole movie
felt kinda like a rpg, and the story was of some sub-plot that would likely
be included in some rpg. The movie is a sci-fi marvel, about a team of
fighters called the Deep Eyes, and a young woman known as Aki Ross. Aki
is constantly haunted by dreams in which she doesn't understand, and her
quest to find out what they mean lead to surprising story. The acting
was pretty good, but the CGI characters as good as they look, seem to
still have problems really expressing emotion. It would have been nice
if the music was as good as the games, but instead it was just a lot of
battle music, and some J-pop esque songs at the end. The very first song
during the credits is pretty good though. All in all FF TsW was up there
with Mortal Kombat. It would be better if the next FF movie was based
off more fantasy than sci-fi, but with the sales of the first one, a second
one might not ever make it. According to Conan O'Brien, Final Fantasy
The Spirits Within is to no real people in the movie, as Final Fantasy
The Spirits Within is to no real people in the theater. : (
