VIDEO GAMING ON T.V. AND IN THE MOVIES

Do they think we're idiots?
O.K., this week I'll be brief....very brief in fact. The other day I
was watching a re-run of "Malcolm in the middle" on the Fox channel. In
the opening scene, the three boys in the family were sitting in front
of the television on a Saturday morning playing video games. They were
holding N64 controllers and pounding away at the buttons while staring
very hard at the T.V. set. The episode went on to be about something or
other, but the thing that bothered me was the WAY they were pounding the
controller. Any gamer worth his salt knows that video games aren't played
by wildly pressing buttons as though your hand was having an epileptic
seizure. Even the faster paced games like Tekken require some calculated
pressing.
"Malcolm in the middle" is not the only show guilty of misportraying
the way video games are played. In fact, every time the movies or television
have scenes in which vids are being played, the M.O. is the same; the
actors randomly and forcefully press all the buttons at the same time
while staring stone-faced into the T.V. set. I don't know about you, but
I play video games with a lot of emotion and sometimes even facial contortions.
I think when the entertainment industry carries on like this, they not
only make the actors look silly, but create an untrue vision of what video
game playing is like.
There, I said it, and now I can get on with my night. Next week I will
return to my regular style of over-analyzation and run-on sentences.
