Chess: The Queen Party Puzzle

Here is a classic puzzle. It even uses a classic game as its basis: chess. This one is VERY old and as such you may have seen it before (7th Guest maybe?). Even if you have, maybe this is your chance to figure it out. As with all good puzzles, the rules of the game are simple. Figuring it out on the other hand isn't. So let's get started. How many queens can you invite to your party without a fight breaking out?
What you must do is add as many Queens as you can to a chessboard with OUT them being able to attack each other.
Really that's all there is to it. The rules of chess state that a Queen can move in a straight line as many spaces as it wants in any direction. Be it up, down, left, right, or diagonal. So what you have to do is add Queens onto a chessboard without any being up, down, left, right, or diagonal (all 4 diagonal directions) from each other. And not just the adjacent squares, they can't be in any direction in a straight line from that piece all the way across the board. Thankfully though, there is no trick to this. You just have to logically figure it out.
Your first order of business is trying to figure out just exactly how many can possibly fit. Then figure out how you can do it. That's the how they "git ya".
