Caution, spoilers abound!
Finally, the "last" Star Wars movie is released... But was it better than the last two sub par prequels? Well, yes actually.
Was it a great movie? Well... Definitely an entertaining movie, with plenty of action and lightsaber duels. But, the plot seemed a bit... unconvincing at times.
For example, Anikin's trip to the dark side... He has a vision that Padme will die during childbirth, and the Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine tells Anikin that the power of the dark side of the force can restore life. So... This drives Anikin to mudrer children?? Even in combination with the whole "suspicions against the other Jedi" and "Anikin can be on the Jedi council but he cant be a Jedi master" subplots, it just doesn't seem to be enough... But then again, it wouldn't be the first time the love for a woman makes a man go on an insane killing spree! (Somehow any specific instance of this slips my mind).
I won't bother "dissing" the cheesy dialogue, feel free to read any other Episode II review if you want that. But, I will say that there were some actors that did very good jobs bringing their characters to life. The actors behind Obi-Wan and Palpatine are really the only ones that come to mind... I really liked Palpatine's "Darth Plagus" speech.
A few more things that annoyed me before I get into why this movie really is worth watching...
(Big Spoiler Warning)
For one, how can they make Mace Windu out to be stronger that Yoda!? You know, the Yoda! Windu "whoops up on" Palpatine without taking any real damage, and yet Yoda fights and fights the Emperor to no avail. And then runs away from him... when he gets bored? Yoda was never really incapacitated before he fled from Palpatine, I guess he just thought "What the hoo, my lightsaber is waaaay over there, I'll be leaving now!"
This brings me to another plot "hole" as I see it... Anikin is on a completely different planet than Palpatine is, and yet Yoda and Obi-Wan split up and try and tackle the "evil Sith" individually. Obi-Wan flying far away to battle Vadar and Yoda staying where he was to fight Palpatine. It seems to me, they could have both gained up on Palpatine at the start, taken him out easily with their combined powers (assuming Yoda and Obi-Wan combined are stronger than say... the great Mace Windu), and then teamed up against Vadar. Did George Lucas really think movie watchers would over look this "stupid move" by our Jedi heroes?
Another "Jedi power" discrepancy... Count Duku easily defeats Obi-Wan at the movie's beginning, and only the great and powerful Anikan can defeat and kill Duku. And yet, at the movies end, it is Obi-Wan that is able to get the upper hand on Anikin (he slices his legs off and leaves him for dead... near a pool of lava).
The "lava burning Vadar" thing seemed very corny to me... Like a "oh yeah, Vadar is supposed to be horribly maimed somehow so he can get in that suit... lets throw him in lava!" I would have rather seen him "horribly wounded" in a "last stance" battle against the dark side and Palpatine's doom lightning than this... It would have made more sense than Anikin just following Palpatine's will "to save Padme."
Now for the movie's good parts! For one, the special effects are better than ever and the scenery is very beautiful. The opening scene where you see a long shot af the huge space battle and all the laser beams shooting around is breathtaking indeed, and there is always a lot going on in a scene's background (be it a city scape complete with sprawling traffic, or a landscape filled with animals and plant life).
And then of course, there are the light saber battles... Which are as amazing as they are long. My only complaint is that there never seemed to be any "unique styles" like there were in the other prequels (the bowstaff lightsaber of Darth Maul in Episode I and the two lightsaber technique Anikin uses in Episode II). The four lightsaber wielding General Grievous was pretty cool though, but it just wasn't the same.
So basically, you need to see this movie for the cool lightsaber fights alone! And finally, in a Star Wars movie, you'll get to see the Emperor fighting with a lightsaber. Though if he has so much trouble killing Jedi by himself, then I can see why he is always manipulating someone else into fighting his battles (even in Return of the Jedi, he just sits on his thrown and laughs... as Vadar and Luke fight).
All in all though, I'd give the movie a B-
