Overlooked Gaming Foibles...

It seems as gamers we have grown accustomed to
certain events in gaming. Events that seem to
throw all elements of reality out he window. No
I'm not talking about things like magic, dragons,
intergalactic travel, and the like I am referring
tote more commonly overlooked minute details in
games. Presented below are a few scenarios
outlining some of the biggest inconsistencies in
games today by genre. Let us start off with the
genre guilty of containing more illogical events
and circumstances than any other, the RPG.
Picture this, as Cloud Strife you are wandering
through the abandoned Shinra mansion. You come
across a rare sword so you pick it up and put it
into your inventory. This is the basis for my
first inaccuracy. Are we really supposed to
believe that all of these items could be carried
by one person? Sure potions and the lie are
simple enough due to their incredibly light weight
and the relatively low amount of space they
occupy, but what about things like layers of
mythril armor and buster swords? Surely companies
don't actually think that the average gamer goes
about their business without recognizing something
like this.
Another gripe I have with RPGs is your ability to
steal items from innocent towns people (I believe
Conn ranted about this but I am not sure). Imagine
living in a peaceful mountain village, completely
unaware of the impending doom that is going to wipe
all civilization from the planet when all of a
sudden some surly looking muscle bound hero with a
big sword robs you of all your worldly
possessions. I mean I don't know about you but
I would be a little agitated at such an occurrence.
My final gripe with RPGs are the fact that you
must pay for items in stores. I mean while robbing
someone of their possessions is unacceptable you
would think that local merchants and inn keepers
would be kind enough to give you some free wares
to aide you in your quest to save the world
for gods' sake. Think about it if someone on a
mission to save the world from impending
destruction stopped in your store but was 1 gold
piece short of buying a powerful sword, would you
turn him away like a begging dog? I know I wouldn't.
Next we move to the platform genre. Although there
are not as many inconsistencies here, there are
still a few glaring ones I think I should go
over.
First of all, what is with floating platforms?
Sure they add a layer of difficulty to a level but
how are they floatin? Is there some sort of
unknown anti gravitational force that allows the
platform to be suspended in mid air? If this is
infact the case than why is it that if we fall
off we die? Wouldn't we be caught up in the anti
gravitational pull? This theory is extended with
the inclusion of moving platforms but I won't get
into that.
Another main problem is the invisible barrier.
You're running through a level all happy and
what not when BAM you run face first into a
seemingly non existent wall. What the hell gives
here? It seems some developers are to lazy to
create some sort of natural boundary like a big
mountain or a big fence.
The final genre of games I will take a look at
are those in the FPS genre.
Take a great game like Quake III for example. You
run around an arena hunting down your enemies.
You switch from a rocket launcher to a BFG to a
lightning gun with ease. Of course it never
crossed the developers' mind that along with the
weight of the weapons themselves but with the
weight of the munitions required to operate said
weapons that's quite a heavy load for one human to
handle. I honestly doubt that a single soldier
could carry all that equipment yet run around so
effortlessly, not to mention make death defying
jumps.
Also if you were being shot buy a pulse gun would
you be able to stand still and return fire? Hells
no, you would be flat on your back in a corner
gasping for breath. Yet developers have no grasp
on progressive pain. A character goes from agile
killing machine one minute, to a rotting corpse the
next.
Well that's it for this rant. I hope none of you
took this seriously because it was not intended
to be. Also I am interested in any feedback so
